As they went, behold, some of the guard came into the city and reported to the chief priests everything that had happened. They gathered with the elders and took counsel, then gave a considerable amount of silver to the soldiers, saying, “Say, ‘His disciples came by night and stole Him while we slept.’ If this is heard before the governor, we will persuade him and make you free from worry.” They took the silver and did as they were instructed. This account was spread among Jews until this very day.
