That same day Jesus appeared in another form to two of His disciples as they walked into the country, traveling to Emmaus, a village sixty stadia from Jerusalem.
They were talking with one another about all these things that had happened. And it happened that, as they talked and discussed, Jesus Himself drew near and traveled with them. But their eyes were held back from recognizing Him. And He said to them, “What are these words you are exchanging with one another as you walk?” And they stood still, downcast. One named Cleopas answered Him, “Are You the only visitor in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?” And He said to them, “What things?” They said to Him, “The things concerning Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how our chief priests and rulers handed Him over to a judgment of death and crucified Him. But we were hoping that He was the One about to redeem Israel. Yet indeed, besides all these things, this is the third day since these things happened. Moreover, some women from among us astonished us. They went to the tomb early and did not find His body, and came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who say that He is alive.
“And some of those with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but Him they did not see.” And He said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow in heart to believe all that the prophets spoke! Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and enter into His glory?” And beginning from Moses and from all the prophets, He interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself. They drew near the village to which they were traveling, and He made as though He would travel farther. But they urged Him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, because it is toward evening and the day has already declined.” And He went in to stay with them. And it happened that as He reclined at table with them, He took the bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized Him, and He vanished from their sight. And they said to one another, “Was not our heart burning within us as He spoke to us on the road, as He opened the Scriptures to us?”
They rose that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found the Eleven and those with them gathered together, saying, “The Lord has truly been raised and has appeared to Simon!” And they related the things that happened on the road, and how He was made known to them in the breaking of the bread.
They reported to the rest, yet they did not believe them either.
