Jesus went out again beside the sea, and the whole crowd came to Him, and He taught them. As He passed by, He saw the tax collector Levi son of Alphaeus, called Matthew, sitting at the tax station. He said, “Follow Me.” Leaving everything, he rose and followed Him.

Levi gave a great reception for Him in his house. Many tax collectors and sinners reclined with Jesus and His disciples, for many followed Him. The Pharisees and their scribes grumbled to His disciples, “Why does your Teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners? Why do you eat and drink with them?” Jesus heard and answered, “The strong have no need of a physician, but those who are ill do. Go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice.’ I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”
