The disciples had forgotten to take bread and had only one loaf with them in the boat. Jesus warned, “Watch out! Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees, and the leaven of Herod.” They reasoned with one another that they had no bread. Knowing this, He said, “Why do you reason among yourselves, people of little faith, because you did not take bread? Do you not yet grasp or understand? Is your heart hardened? Having eyes, do you not see? Having ears, do you not hear? Do you not remember?

“When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of pieces did you take up?” They said to Him, “Twelve.” “And when I broke the seven for the four thousand, how many hampers full of pieces did you take up?” They said to Him, “Seven.” He said to them, “Do you not yet understand?

“How do you not understand that I did not speak to you about bread? But beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” Then they understood that He did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
