Jesus and His disciples went to the villages of Caesarea Philippi. On the way, while He was praying apart and His disciples were with Him, He asked, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” They answered, “Some say John the Baptist; others Elijah; still others Jeremiah or one of the ancient prophets risen again.” He asked, “But you, who do you say I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father in the heavens. And I tell you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My Church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of the heavens. Whatever you bind upon earth will have been bound in the heavens, and whatever you loose upon earth will have been loosed in the heavens.” Then He instructed the disciples to tell no one that He was the Christ.
