From then on Jesus began to show His disciples openly that He must go to Jerusalem, suffer many things, be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and on the third day be raised.
Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, “May mercy be Yours, Lord! This shall certainly never happen to You.” But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me, because you do not set your mind on the things of God, but on the things of human beings.”
Calling the crowd to Him with His disciples, He said, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow Me. Whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and for the good news will save it and find it. What does it benefit a person to gain the whole world but destroy or forfeit himself? What can a person give in exchange for his life? Whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes in His glory and the glory of His Father with the holy angels. Then He will repay each person according to his conduct. Truly I tell you, some standing here will certainly not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom, the kingdom of God having come in power.”
