The Seventy Two and the Lord of the Harvest

After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others also, and sent them two by two before His face into every city and place where He Himself was about to go. He said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Therefore petition the Lord of the harvest to send workers out into His harvest. Go; behold, I send you as lambs among wolves. Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals, and greet no one along the road. Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ If a son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him; otherwise it will return to you. Remain in that same house, eating and drinking what they provide, for the worker is worthy of his pay. Do not move from house to house. Whatever city you enter and they receive you, eat what is set before you. Heal the sick in it and say to them, ‘God’s kingdom has drawn near to you.’ But whatever city you enter and they do not receive you, go out into its streets and say, ‘Even the dust from your city that clings to our feet we wipe off against you.

“Nevertheless know this: God’s kingdom has drawn near.’ I tell you, it will be more bearable for Sodom on that day than for that city. Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty deeds performed among you had happened in Tyre and Sidon, they would long ago have repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. Nevertheless, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you. And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted as far as heaven? You will be brought down as far as Hades. The one who hears you hears Me, and the one who rejects you rejects Me; the one who rejects Me rejects the One who sent Me.”

The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in Your name.” He said to them, “I was watching Satan fall from heaven like lightning. Behold, I have given you authority to tread upon snakes and scorpions, and over all the enemy’s power, and nothing will ever harm you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names have been written in the heavens.” At that very hour He rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I acknowledge You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because You hid these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to infants. Yes, Father, because so it was Your good pleasure. Everything has been handed over to Me by My Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal Him.” Turning privately to the disciples, He said, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see.

“For I tell you that many prophets and kings wished to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.”
