126:1A song of the ascents. For Solomon.

Unless the Lord builds a house,

those building it have labored in vain.

Unless the Lord guards a city,

the watchman has kept awake in vain.

126:2It is vain for you to rise early,

to get up after sitting down,

you who eat bread of pain,

when He gives sleep to His beloved ones.

126:3Look, sons are the Lord’s inheritance,

the reward of the fruit of the womb.

126:4Like arrows in a mighty man’s hand,

so are the sons of those who have been cast out.

126:5Happy is the person who will fill his desire with them.

They will not be put to shame

when they speak with their enemies at the gate.
