By the Rivers of Babylon We Sat Down and Wept

136:1For David.

By Babylon’s rivers, there we sat and wept

when we remembered Zion.

136:2Upon the willows in her midst

we hung our instruments.

136:3For there those who took us captive asked us for words of songs,

and those who led us away for a hymn:

“Sing us some of Zion’s songs.”

136:4How can we sing the Lord’s song

on foreign land?

136:5If I forget you, Jerusalem,

may my right hand be forgotten.

136:6May my tongue cling to my throat

if I do not remember you,

if I do not set Jerusalem first at the beginning of my gladness.

136:7Remember, Lord, Edom’s sons on Jerusalem’s day,

those saying, “Empty her, empty her,

down to the foundation within her!”

136:8Daughter Babylon, miserable one,

happy is the one who repays you

the repayment you gave us.

136:9Happy is the one who seizes your infants

and dashes them against the rock.
