He Reached Down from on High and Took Me

17:1For the end. Of the Lord’s servant David, who spoke the words of this song to the Lord on the day the Lord rescued him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul.
17:2And he said:
I will love You, Lord, my strength.
17:3The Lord is my firm foundation, my refuge, and my rescuer;
my God is my helper, and I will hope in Him;
my protector, the horn of my salvation, my supporter.
17:4Praising, I will call upon the Lord,
and I will be saved from my enemies.
17:5The birth pangs of death encompassed me,
and torrents of lawlessness threw me into turmoil.
17:6The birth pangs of Hades surrounded me;
the traps of death overtook me.
17:7And when I was afflicted, I called upon the Lord
and cried out to my God.
He heard my voice from His holy temple,
and my cry before Him will enter His ears.
17:8And the earth was shaken and became trembling;
the foundations of the mountains were troubled
and shaken because God was angry with them.
17:9Smoke rose in His anger,
and fire from His face set things ablaze;
coals were kindled from Him.
17:10And He bent heaven and came down,
and gloom was beneath His feet.
17:11And He mounted cherubim and flew;
He flew on the wings of winds.
17:12And He made darkness His hiding place;
His tent was around Him,
dark water in clouds of the air.
17:13From the far-shining radiance before Him, the clouds passed—
hail and coals of fire.
17:14And the Lord thundered from heaven,
and the Most High gave His voice.
17:15And He sent out arrows and scattered them;
He multiplied lightning flashes and threw them into turmoil.
17:16And the springs of the waters appeared,
and the foundations of the inhabited world were uncovered
at Your rebuke, Lord,
at the blast of the spirit of Your anger.
17:17He sent from on high and took me;
He took me to Himself out of many waters.
17:18He will rescue me from my powerful enemies
and from those who hate me, for they grew stronger than I.
17:19They overtook me in the day of my affliction,
and the Lord became my support,
17:20and He brought me out into a spacious place.
He will rescue me because He desired me.
He will rescue me from my powerful enemies
and from those who hate me.
17:21And the Lord will repay me according to my righteousness,
and according to the purity of my hands He will repay me,
17:22because I kept the Lord’s ways
and did not act impiously by turning from my God,
17:23because all His judgments are before me,
and I did not put His ordinances away from me.
17:24And I will be blameless with Him
and guard myself from my lawlessness.
17:25And the Lord will repay me according to my righteousness
and according to the purity of my hands before His eyes.
17:26With a holy one You will show Yourself holy,
and with an innocent man You will be innocent,
17:27and with a chosen one You will be chosen,
and with a twisted one You will twist.
17:28For You will save a lowly people
and humble the eyes of the arrogant.
17:29For You will light my lamp, Lord;
my God, You will light my darkness.
17:30For by You I will be rescued from a raiding band,
and by my God I will cross over a wall.
17:31My God—His way is blameless;
the Lord’s sayings are tried by fire;
He is a protector of all who hope in Him.
17:32For who is God except the Lord?
And who is God except our God?
17:33God girds me with power
and made my way blameless,
17:34He sets my feet firmly like a deer’s
and makes me stand upon the heights,
17:35training my hands for war;
and You made my arms a bronze bow.
17:36And You gave me the protection of my salvation;
Your right hand supported me,
and Your discipline set me upright completely,
and Your discipline itself will teach me.
17:37You widened my steps beneath me,
and my footprints did not grow weak.
17:38I will pursue my enemies and overtake them,
and I will not turn back until they fail.
17:39I will press them down, and they will certainly be unable to stand;
they will fall beneath my feet.
17:40And You girded me with power for war;
You fettered all those who rose against me beneath me,
17:41and You made my enemies turn their backs to me,
and You destroyed those who hated me.
17:42They cried out, and there was no one to save;
they cried to the Lord, and He did not hear them.
17:43And I will grind them fine like dust before the wind;
I will smooth them away like mud in the streets.
17:44You will rescue me from the people’s disputes;
You will appoint me head of nations;
a people I did not know served me.
17:45At the hearing of the ear, it obeyed me;
foreigners lied to me.
17:46Foreigners grew old
and limped away from their paths.
17:47The Lord lives! Blessed be my God!
Let the God of my salvation be exalted,
17:48the God who gives me acts of vengeance
and subjected peoples beneath me,
17:49my rescuer from my wrathful enemies.
You will raise me above those who rise against me;
You will rescue me from an unjust man.
17:50Therefore I will thank You among the nations, Lord,
and sing praise to Your name,
17:51magnifying the salvations of His king
and showing mercy to His anointed,
to David and to his seed forever.
