They Hated Me Without a Cause

34:1Of David.

Judge, Lord, those who wrong me;

make war on those who make war on me.

34:2Take hold of weapon and shield,

and rise to my aid.

34:3Draw the sword and close the way against those pursuing me;

say to my soul, “I am your salvation.”

34:4Let those who seek my soul be ashamed and abashed;

let those devising evils for me turn backward and be put to shame.

34:5Let them become like dust before the wind,

with an angel of the Lord pressing them out.

34:6Let their way become darkness and a slippery path,

with an angel of the Lord pursuing them.

34:7For without cause they hid for me the destruction of their trap;

without purpose they reproached my soul.

34:8Let a trap they do not know come upon them;

let the snare they hid catch them,

and into that trap they will fall.

34:9But my soul will exult in the Lord;

it will delight in His salvation.

34:10All my bones will say,

“Lord, who is like You,

rescuing the poor from the hand of those stronger than he,

and the poor and needy from those plundering him?”

34:11Unjust witnesses rose up;

they questioned me about what I did not know.

34:12They repaid me evils for good things,

and childlessness to my soul.

34:13But when they troubled me, I put on sackcloth

and humbled my soul with fasting;

and my prayer will return to my bosom.

34:14As for a neighbor, as for our brother, so I sought to please;

like one mourning and downcast, so I humbled myself.

34:15But against me they rejoiced and gathered;

scourges gathered against me, and I did not know;

they were torn apart and felt no remorse.

34:16They tested me and mocked me with mockery;

they gnashed their teeth at me.

34:17Lord, when will You look upon this?

Restore my soul from their wickedness,

my only life from lions.

34:18I will thank You, Lord, in a great assembly;

among a weighty people I will praise You.

34:19Let those unjustly hostile to me not rejoice over me,

those who hate me without cause and signal with their eyes.

34:20For to me they spoke peaceful things,

but in anger they devised deceits.

34:21They opened their mouth wide against me;

they said, “Well done! Well done! Our eyes have seen!”

34:22You have seen, Lord; do not remain silent.

Lord, do not depart from me.

34:23Awake, Lord, and attend to my judgment,

my God and my Lord, to my case.

34:24Judge me according to Your righteousness, Lord my God;

let them not rejoice over me.

34:25Let them not say in their hearts, “Well done! Well done for our soul!”

Nor let them say, “We have swallowed him.”

34:26May those rejoicing at my troubles be ashamed and abashed together;

let those boasting against me wear shame and humiliation.

34:27May those who desire my righteousness exult and rejoice;

let them always say, “May the Lord be magnified”—

those who desire His servant’s peace.

34:28My tongue will meditate on Your righteousness,

on Your praise all day long.
