Give Us Help from Trouble; Vain Is the Help of Man

59:1For the end. For those who will yet be changed. For an inscription on a pillar, of David, for instruction.

59:2When he burned Mesopotamia of Syria and Syria Zobah, and Joab returned and struck the Valley of Salt—twelve thousand.

59:3God, You rejected us and pulled us down;

You were angry and had compassion on us.

59:4You shook the earth and troubled it;

heal its fractures, for it was shaken.

59:5You showed Your people hard things;

You made us drink wine of stupor.

59:6You gave those who fear You a sign

to flee from the face of a bow. Diapsalma.

59:7So that Your beloved may be rescued,

save by Your right hand and hear me.

59:8God spoke in His holy place:

“I will exult and divide Shechem,

and measure out the Valley of Tents.

59:9Gilead is mine, and Manasseh is mine;

Ephraim is the strengthening of my head;

Judah is my king.

59:10Moab is the basin of my hope;

upon Idumea I will extend my sandal;

foreigners were subjected to me.”

59:11Who will lead me away into an enclosed city?

Who will guide me as far as Idumea?

59:12Is it not You, God, who rejected us?

And You will not go out, God, with our forces.

59:13Give us help from affliction,

for human salvation is vain.

59:14But through God we will do a mighty deed,

and He will reduce our afflicters to nothing.
