They Set Their Signs Up in the Sanctuary

73:1Of understanding. Of Asaph.

Why, God, did You reject to the end?

Why was Your wrath angry against the sheep of Your pasture?

73:2Remember Your congregation, which You acquired from the beginning;

You redeemed the rod of Your inheritance,

this Mount Zion, where You encamped.

73:3Raise Your hands against their arrogance to the end,

for all the evil the enemy did in Your holy places.

73:4And those hating You boasted within Your feast;

they set their signs as signs, and did not understand.

73:5As though into the entrance above,

73:6as in a forest of trees, with axes they cut out her doors;

together with axe and stone-cutting tool they tore her down.

73:7They burned Your sanctuary with fire;

they profaned the tent of Your name to the ground.

73:8Their kindred said in their hearts together,

“Come, let us burn all God’s feasts from the earth!”

73:9We did not see our signs;

there is no prophet any longer,

and he will know us no longer.

73:10How long, God, will the enemy reproach?

Will the adversary provoke Your name to the end?

73:11Why do You turn away Your hand

and Your right hand from within Your bosom to the end?

73:12But God is our King before the age;

He worked salvation in the midst of the earth.

73:13You strengthened the sea by Your power;

You crushed the dragons’ heads upon the water.

73:14You crushed the dragon’s heads;

You gave him as food to the Ethiopian peoples.

73:15You broke open springs and torrents;

You dried up rivers of Etham.

73:16Yours is the day, and Yours is the night;

You fashioned light and the sun.

73:17You made all the earth’s boundaries;

summer and spring—You shaped them.

73:18Remember this: an enemy reproached the Lord,

and a foolish people provoked Your name.

73:19Do not hand over to wild beasts a soul acknowledging You;

do not forget Your needy ones’ souls to the end.

73:20Look upon Your covenant,

for the darkened ones of the earth were filled with houses of lawlessness.

73:21Let a humbled person not turn back disgraced;

the poor and needy will praise Your name.

73:22Arise, God, judge Your case;

remember the reproaches against You by a fool all day.

73:23Do not forget Your suppliants’ voice;

the arrogance of those hating You ascended continually toward You.
