James brings listening, speech, anger, and obedience into one examination of daily life. The word is to be received with gentleness and remembered through practice.
1:19 Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger,
1:20 for a man’s anger does not accomplish the righteousness of God.
1:21 Therefore, putting away every impurity and the abundance of evil, receive with gentleness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
1:22 But become doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
1:23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man looking at his natural face in a mirror,
1:24 for he looked at himself and went away and immediately forgot what he was like.
1:25 But the one who looks closely into the complete law, the law of freedom, and continues in it, becoming no forgetful hearer but a doer of work, will be blessed in his doing.

Editorial reflection
The mirror in this passage exposes the ease of recognizing something true and immediately forgetting it. James describes a more patient attention: looking closely, continuing, and doing. Begin with his first instruction to be quick to hear. It applies both to receiving Scripture and to the conversations in which your response is being formed. You may notice a sentence that interrupts an impatient habit or a familiar excuse. Stay with that sentence long enough to name a concrete response. Wisdom grows through this movement from attention to action. Today’s reading asks for a practiced answer, however small, that can survive after the book is closed.

Generous God, make me quick to hear and slow to speak. Help me receive Your word with gentleness. Bring to mind what I am tempted to forget, and give me courage to put one faithful response into practice. Amen.
