The Land That Still Remains

13:1Joshua was old, advanced in days. The Lord said to Joshua, “You are advanced in days, and much land remains for an inheritance.

13:2This is the land left: the territories of the Philistines, the Geshurites, and the Canaanites,

13:3from the uninhabited region facing Egypt as far as the borders of Ekron, on the left of the Canaanites; it is reckoned to the five satrapies of the Philistines: Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron; and to the Hivites,

13:4from Thaiman, and to all the land of Canaan opposite Gaza; and the Sidonians as far as Aphek, as far as the borders of the Amorites;

13:5and all the land of Gabli of the Philistines, and all Lebanon toward the sunrise, from Gilgal beneath Mount Hermon to the entrance of Hamath.

13:6All who inhabit the hill country from Lebanon to Misrephoth-maim—all the Sidonians—I will destroy them before Israel. Only distribute it by lot to Israel, as I commanded you.

13:7Now divide this land as an inheritance among the nine tribes and the half-tribe of Manasseh. You shall give it from the Jordan to the Great Sea toward the sunset; the Great Sea shall form the boundary.”

The Inheritance East of the Jordan

13:8To the two tribes and the half-tribe of Manasseh—to Reuben and Gad—Moses gave land beyond the Jordan toward the sunrise. Moses the servant of the Lord gave it,

13:9from Aroer on the bank of the Arnon torrent, and the city in the middle of the ravine, and all the Misor from Medeba to Dibon;

13:10all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, as far as the borders of the sons of Ammon;

13:11Gilead, the territories of the Geshurites and Maacathites, all Mount Hermon, and all Bashan as far as Salcah;

13:12all the kingdom of Og in Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and Edrei. He remained from the giants, and Moses struck him and destroyed him.

13:13But the sons of Israel did not destroy the Geshurites, Maacathites, and Canaanites; the king of Geshur and the Maacathites lived among the sons of Israel to this very day.

No Inheritance for Levi

13:14Only to the tribe of Levi no inheritance was given. The Lord, the God of Israel, is their inheritance, as the Lord said to them. This is the division that Moses apportioned to the sons of Israel in Araboth Moab beyond the Jordan opposite Jericho.

The Portion of Reuben

13:15Moses gave an inheritance to the tribe of Reuben according to their divisions.

13:16Their borders were from Aroer facing the Arnon ravine, and the city in the Arnon ravine, and all the Misor,

13:17as far as Heshbon and all the cities in the Misor, Dibon, Bamoth-baal, and the house of Beelmon,

13:18Jahaz, Kedemoth, and Mephaath,

13:19Kiriathaim, Sibmah, Serada, and Sior on Mount Emak,

13:20Beth-peor, Asedoth Phasga, and Beth-jeshimoth,

13:21all the cities of the Misor and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, whom Moses struck, together with the leaders of Midian—Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba—rulers under Sihon, and those who lived in the land.

13:22They also killed Balaam son of Beor, the diviner, in the onslaught.

13:23The borders of Reuben were: the Jordan as boundary. This was the inheritance of the sons of Reuben according to their divisions—their cities and their settlements.

The Portion of Gad

13:24Moses gave an inheritance to the sons of Gad according to their divisions.

13:25Their borders were Jazer, all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the sons of Ammon, as far as Aroer facing Rabbah,

13:26and from Heshbon to Ramoth toward Mizpah, and Betonim and Mahanaim, as far as the borders of Debir;

13:27and in Emek: Beth-haram, Bethanabra, Succoth, and Zaphon, and the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon. The Jordan shall form the boundary as far as a part of the Sea of Chinnereth beyond the Jordan on the east.

13:28This was the inheritance of the sons of Gad according to their divisions—their cities and their settlements.

The Portion of Half Manasseh

13:29Moses gave an inheritance to the half-tribe of Manasseh according to their divisions.

13:30Their borders were from Mahanaim: all the kingdom of Bashan, all the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all the villages of Jair in Bashan—sixty cities;

13:31And half of Gilead, and the places in Ashtaroth and Edrei, cities of Og’s kingdom in Bashan, were given to the sons of Machir son of Manasseh and to half the sons of Machir son of Manasseh according to their divisions.

13:32These are those whom Moses endowed with an inheritance beyond the Jordan, in Araboth Moab, beyond the Jordan opposite Jericho on the east.
