He Was Put on Trial for the Words He Was Given

The Sermon in the Lord’s Court
33:1At the beginning of King Jehoiakim son of Josiah, this word came from the Lord:
33:2Thus said the Lord: Stand in the courtyard of the Lord’s house and deliver an oracle to all the Judeans and all who come to bow down in the Lord’s house—all the words I commanded you to deliver to them. Do not take away a word.
33:3Perhaps they will hear and turn, each from his evil way, and I will cease from the evils I plan to do to them because of their evil practices.
33:4And say: Thus said the Lord: If you do not hear Me, walking in My ordinances that I set before your face,
33:5listening to the words of My servants the prophets whom I send to you from early morning, and have sent—though you did not listen to Me—
33:6then I will make this house like Shiloh and make the city a curse to all the nations of all the earth.
The Priests and False Prophets Seize Jeremiah
33:7And the priests, false prophets, and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the Lord’s house.
33:8And when Jeremiah stopped speaking everything the Lord commanded him to speak to all the people, the priests, false prophets, and all the people seized him, saying: You must die!
33:9Because you prophesied in the Lord’s name, saying, This house will be like Shiloh and this city will be emptied of inhabitants. And all the people assembled against Jeremiah in the Lord’s house.
33:10And Judah’s rulers heard this word and went up from the king’s house to the Lord’s house. They sat before the Lord’s New Gate.
They Demand a Death Sentence
33:11And the priests and false prophets said to the rulers and all the people: A death judgment for this man, because he prophesied against this city, as you heard with your own ears!
33:12And Jeremiah said to the rulers and all the people: The Lord sent me to prophesy against this house and this city all these words you heard.
33:13And now make your ways and works better and hear the Lord’s voice, and the Lord will cease from the evils He spoke against you.
33:14And look, I am in your hands. Do to me what is advantageous and better for you.
33:15But know for certain that if you kill me, you place innocent blood upon yourselves, this city, and its inhabitants, because the Lord truly sent me to you to speak all these words in your ears.
33:16And the rulers and all the people said to the priests and false prophets: There is no death judgment for this man, because he spoke to us in the name of the Lord our God.
The Elders Recall Micah of Moresheth
33:17And men from the land’s elders rose and said to the whole congregation of the people:
33:18Micah the Morathite lived in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah and said to all Judah’s people: Thus said the Lord: Zion will be plowed as a field, Jerusalem will become an untrodden place, and the house’s mountain a grove of woodland.
33:19Did Hezekiah and all Judah kill him? Was it not that they feared the Lord and entreated the Lord’s face, and the Lord ceased from the evils He spoke against them? And we have done great evils against our own lives!
33:20And there was a man prophesying in the Lord’s name, Uriah son of Shemaiah from Kiriath-jearim. He prophesied concerning this land according to all Jeremiah’s words.
Uriah Son of Shemaiah
33:21And King Jehoiakim and all the rulers heard all his words and sought to kill him. Uriah heard and entered Egypt.
33:22And the king sent men to Egypt,
33:23and they brought him out from there and brought him to the king. He struck him with the sword and threw him into the tomb of the sons of his people.
33:24Nevertheless, Ahikam son of Shaphan’s hand was with Jeremiah, so that he was not handed into the people’s hands and they did not kill him.
