Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom He had raised from the dead. A supper was made for Him in the house of Simon the leper. Martha served, and Lazarus reclined at table with Him. Mary came with an alabaster vessel containing a litra of very costly perfume of genuine nard. She broke the vessel and poured the perfume over His head, anointed His feet, and wiped them with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance.

Some of the disciples were indignant and rebuked her harshly: “Why has this perfume been wasted? It could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor.” Judas Iscariot, who was about to hand Jesus over, voiced the objection. He said it not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief and, having the money box, used to carry off what was put into it.

Jesus said, “Leave her. Why do you trouble the woman? She has done a beautiful work for Me. You always have the poor with you, and whenever you wish you can do good to them, but you do not always have Me. She did what she could; she has anointed My body beforehand for burial. Let her keep it for the day of My burial. Truly I tell you, wherever this good news is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her.”

A great crowd of the Jews learned that He was there, and they came not because of Jesus alone, but also to see Lazarus, whom He raised from the dead. But the chief priests planned to kill Lazarus also, because on his account many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus.
