The next day the great crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. As He drew near Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, He sent two disciples: “Go into the village opposite you. Immediately you will find a donkey tied up and a colt with her, on which no one has ever sat. Untie them and bring them. If anyone asks why you are doing this, say, ‘The Lord has need of them, and will send the colt back here immediately.’”
The disciples went and found them just as He had said, the colt tied near a door outside on the street. As they were untying the colt, its owners and some of those standing there said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?” They answered them just as Jesus had said, “The Lord has need of it,” and the people let them go. They brought the donkey and the colt, put their garments upon them, and seated Jesus on the colt. This fulfilled what was spoken through the prophet: “Tell the daughter of Zion: ‘Do not fear. Behold, your King comes to you, meek and mounted upon a donkey, upon a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’”
Most of the crowd spread their garments on the road. Others cut leafy branches from the fields and trees and spread them before Him; those coming out to meet Him carried palm branches. As He neared the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of disciples rejoiced and praised God loudly for all the mighty works they had seen. Those ahead and those following cried, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the One coming in the name of the Lord, the King of Israel! Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest! Hosanna in the highest!”
And some of the Pharisees from the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.” And He answered, “I tell you, if these fall silent, the stones will cry out.”
His disciples did not understand these things at first. But when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about Him and that they had done these things to Him. So the crowd that was with Him when He called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead bore witness. For this reason the crowd also met Him, because they heard that He had done this sign. So the Pharisees said among themselves, “You see that you accomplish nothing. Behold, the world has gone after Him.”
