Before the feast of the Passover, Jesus, knowing that His hour had come to pass from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, loved them to the end. And while supper was taking place, the devil having already put it into the heart that Judas, son of Simon Iscariot, should hand Him over, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He came out from God and was going to God, He rose from supper and laid aside His garments, and took a towel and girded Himself. Then He poured water into the basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. So He came to Simon Peter, who said to Him, “Lord, do You wash my feet?” Jesus answered him, “What I do you do not understand now, but you will understand after these things.” Peter said to Him, “You will certainly never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “Unless I wash you, you have no share with Me.” Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!” Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed has no need to wash except the feet, but is wholly clean. And you are clean, but not all.” For He knew the one who was handing Him over; for this reason He said, “Not all of you are clean.” So when He had washed their feet and taken His garments and reclined again, He said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you? You call Me the Teacher and the Lord, and you speak well, for I am. So if I, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, so that you also may do just as I did to you. Amen, amen, I tell you: a slave is not greater than his master, nor a messenger greater than the one who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. I do not speak about all of you. I know whom I chose. But so that the Scripture may be fulfilled: ‘The one eating My bread lifted his heel against Me.’

“From now on I tell you before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe that I am. Amen, amen, I tell you: the one who receives anyone I send receives Me, and the one who receives Me receives the One who sent Me.”

A dispute also arose among them about which of them was considered to be greatest. But He said to them, “The kings of the nations lord it over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called benefactors. But you are not to be so. Rather, let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as the one who serves. For who is greater, the one reclining at table or the one serving? Is it not the one reclining? But I am among you as the One who serves. And you are those who have remained with Me in My trials. And I assign to you a kingdom, just as My Father assigned one to Me, so that you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, and you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.”
