In my first account, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began both to do and to teach until the day when, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom He had chosen, He was taken up. To them He also presented Himself alive after His suffering, with many proofs, appearing to them over forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.
And He said to them, “These are My words that I spoke to you while I was still with you: everything written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and Psalms must be fulfilled.” Then He opened their mind to understand the Scriptures and said to them, “Thus it is written that the Christ should suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in His name to all the nations—beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. And behold, I am sending out the promise of My Father upon you; but remain in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”
While gathered with them, He ordered them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for the Father’s promise, “which,” He said, “you heard from Me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized in the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” So those who had come together asked Him, “Lord, is this the time when You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them, “It is not yours to know times or seasons that the Father has set by His own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and as far as the end of the earth.”
