When Jesus had finished His sayings in the people’s hearing, He entered Capernaum. A centurion’s slave, precious to him, lay paralyzed at home, terribly tormented, ill and about to die. Hearing about Jesus, the centurion approached Him through elders of the Jews, asking Him to come and save the slave. The elders urged Him earnestly, “He is worthy for You to grant him this, for he loves our nation, and he himself built our synagogue for us.” Jesus said, “I will come and heal him,” and went with them.

Jesus went with them. When He was already not far from the house, the centurion sent friends, saying to Him, “Lord, do not trouble Yourself, for I am not worthy for You to enter under my roof. Therefore I did not even consider myself worthy to come to You. But speak with a word, and let my servant be healed. For I too am a man placed under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and my slave, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” When Jesus heard this, He marveled at him. Turning to the crowd following Him, He said, “I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith.

“I tell you that many will come from east and west and recline with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of the heavens, but the sons of the kingdom will be cast into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and grinding of teeth.”

Jesus said to the centurion, “Go; as you have believed, let it happen for you.” The servant was healed in that hour. Those who had been sent returned to the house and found him in good health.
