As the crowds increased, some of the scribes and Pharisees said, “Teacher, we wish to see a sign from You.” Jesus answered, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it except the sign of Jonah the prophet. Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so the Son of Man will be to this generation. For just as Jonah was in the sea creature’s belly three days and three nights, so the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights.
“Men of Nineveh will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at Jonah’s proclamation; and behold, something greater than Jonah is here. The queen of the south will be raised at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear Solomon’s wisdom; and behold, something greater than Solomon is here. When the unclean spirit leaves a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and finds none. Then it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ When it comes, it finds it vacant, swept, and put in order. Then it goes and takes with itself seven other spirits more evil than itself; they enter and dwell there, and that person’s last condition becomes worse than the first. So it will also be with this evil generation.
“No one who lights a lamp puts it in a hidden place or under the modius basket, but on the lampstand, so that those who enter may see its light. Your eye is the lamp of the body. When your eye is single, your whole body is also full of light; but when it is evil, your body is also dark. Watch, therefore, that the light within you is not darkness. So if your whole body is full of light, with no part of it dark, it will be wholly full of light, as when a lamp illumines you with its radiance.”
