When Jesus crossed back in the boat, a large crowd welcomed Him beside the sea, for they were all awaiting Him. While He was speaking, a synagogue ruler named Jairus came and fell at His feet. His only daughter, about twelve years old, was dying. He pleaded earnestly, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay Your hands on her, so that she may be saved and live.” Jesus rose and went with him, and His disciples followed. A great crowd pressed closely around Him.
A woman had suffered a flow of blood for twelve years. She had suffered much under many physicians and spent her whole livelihood, yet no one could heal her; she gained no benefit and instead grew worse. Hearing about Jesus, she came behind Him in the crowd and touched the fringe of His garment, saying within herself, “If I touch even His clothes, I will be saved.” Immediately the flow of blood dried up, and she knew in her body that she had been healed.
Jesus immediately recognized that power had gone out from Him. Turning, He asked, “Who touched My clothes?” Everyone denied it. Peter and the disciples said, “Master, You see the crowd surrounding and pressing against You, and You ask, ‘Who touched Me?’” He answered, “Someone touched Me, for I knew that power had gone out from Me.” He kept looking around for the woman. Seeing that she could not escape notice, she came in fear and trembling and fell before Him. Before all the people she told Him the whole truth: why she had touched Him and how she had been healed immediately. Jesus said, “Take courage, daughter; your faith has saved you. Go in peace, and be well, free from your affliction.” From that hour she was saved.
While He was still speaking, people came from the ruler’s house and said, “Your daughter has died. Why trouble the Teacher any further?” Overhearing them, Jesus said to Jairus, “Do not fear; only believe, and she will be saved.” He allowed no one to accompany Him except Peter, James, and John the brother of James.
At the house He saw flute players and a crowd in an uproar, weeping, wailing loudly, and beating themselves in mourning. He said, “Withdraw. Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child has not died but is sleeping.” They laughed at Him, knowing she had died. He put them all outside, took the child’s father and mother and His three companions, and entered where she lay. Taking her hand, He called, “Talitha koum,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise!” Her spirit returned, and immediately she rose and walked; she was twelve years old. Her parents and those with them were overcome with great amazement. He strictly commanded them to tell no one what had happened and ordered that she be given something to eat. The report nevertheless went out through all that land.
