They came to the other side of the sea, to the country opposite Galilee. As Jesus stepped out of the boat, two men oppressed by demons met Him from the tombs. They were so fierce that no one could pass that way. One of them, a man from the city, had for a long time worn no garment and lived in no house, but among the tombs. The unclean spirit seized him many times. He was kept under guard and often bound with chains and fetters, yet he tore the chains apart and shattered the fetters. No one could subdue him. Driven into deserted places, he continually cried out among the tombs and mountains, night and day, and cut himself with stones.
Seeing Jesus from far away, he ran and bowed before Him. They cried, “What have You to do with us, Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before the appointed time?” The man cried with a loud voice, “Jesus, Son of God Most High, I adjure You by God: do not torment me!” For Jesus was commanding, “Come out of the man, unclean spirit!” He asked, “What is your name?” The man answered, “Legion is my name, because we are many.” Many demons had entered him, and they begged Jesus earnestly not to send them out of the country or command them to go into the abyss.
A large herd of pigs was feeding some distance away near the mountain. The demons begged, “If You cast us out, send us into the pigs, so that we may enter them.” He said, “Go,” and allowed them. The unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs. The whole herd, about two thousand, rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned.
The herdsmen fled and reported everything in the city and in the fields, including what had happened to the men. The whole city came out to meet Jesus. They saw the man who had had the legion sitting at His feet, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid. The witnesses told how the man had been saved and what had happened to the pigs. Gripped by great fear, the whole multitude of the surrounding country begged Jesus to leave their territory.
As He was boarding the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged Him to let him be with Him. He did not allow him, but said to him, “Go home to your own people and report to them how much the Lord has done for you and how He has had mercy on you.” He went away and began proclaiming in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone marveled.
He proclaimed throughout the whole city everything Jesus had done for him. Jesus entered the boat and returned.
