After six days—about eight days from those sayings—Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother and led them privately up a high mountain to pray. As He prayed, He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His garments became white as light, flashing like lightning, exceedingly white beyond what any fuller on earth could make them. Moses and Elijah appeared in glory and spoke with Him of His departure, which He was about to fulfill in Jerusalem.
Peter and his companions were weighed down with sleep, but when fully awake they saw His glory and the two men standing with Him. As the men were parting, Peter said, “Master, it is good for us to be here. If You wish, I will make three tents: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” He did not know what to say, for they were terrified. While he still spoke, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and they were afraid as they entered it. A voice came from the cloud: “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him.”
When the disciples heard, they fell on their faces and were exceedingly afraid. Jesus came, touched them, and said, “Rise, and do not fear.” Lifting their eyes, they saw no one except Jesus Himself alone. As they came down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Tell the vision to no one until the Son of Man is raised from the dead.”
They kept the word to themselves, discussing what rising from the dead meant; in those days they told no one what they had seen. They asked, “Why do the scribes say Elijah must come first?” Jesus answered, “Elijah indeed comes first and restores all things. Yet how is it written of the Son of Man that He should suffer many things and be treated with contempt? Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him but did to him whatever they wished, just as it is written of him. In the same way the Son of Man is also to suffer at their hands.” Then they understood that He spoke of John the Baptist.
