On the following day, when they came down the mountain to the disciples, they found a large crowd and scribes disputing with them. The whole crowd was greatly astonished at seeing Jesus, ran to Him, and greeted Him. He asked, “What are you disputing among yourselves?” A man knelt before Him and cried, “Teacher, I beg You to look upon my son, my only child. Have mercy on him, for he suffers seizures and is badly afflicted. A speechless spirit seizes him: suddenly he cries out, it dashes him down, and he foams, grinds his teeth, and becomes rigid. It scarcely leaves him, bruising him. Often he falls into fire or water. I begged Your disciples to cast it out, but they could not heal him.”
Jesus answered, “O faithless and distorted generation, how long shall I be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here.” As the boy approached and the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately dashed him down and convulsed him. He fell to the ground and rolled about, foaming.
He asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” He said, “From childhood. Often it has thrown him both into fire and into water, to destroy him. But if You can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.” Jesus said to him, “‘If You can’! All things are possible for the one who believes.” Immediately the child’s father cried out and said, “I believe! Help my unbelief!” Seeing that a crowd was running together, Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “Speechless and deaf spirit, I command you: come out of him, and enter him no more.” Crying out and convulsing him violently, it came out. The boy became like a dead person, so that most of them said, “He has died.” But Jesus took him by the hand and raised him, and he stood up.
The boy was healed from that hour, and Jesus gave him back to his father. Everyone was overwhelmed at God’s majesty. When Jesus entered a house, His disciples asked privately, “Why could we not cast it out?” He answered, “Because of your little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith like a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you. This kind can come out by nothing except prayer.”
