He Stilled the Storm, and They Were Glad It Was Quiet

106:1Hallelujah.

Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good;

His mercy is forever.

106:2Let those redeemed by the Lord say so,

those He redeemed from the enemy’s hand.

106:3He gathered them from the countries,

from east and west and north and the sea.

106:4They wandered in the wilderness, in a waterless place;

they did not find a road to a city of habitation,

106:5hungry and thirsty;

their soul failed within them.

106:6They cried to the Lord when they were afflicted,

and He rescued them from their distresses,

106:7and guided them into a straight way

to travel to a city of habitation.

106:8Let them acknowledge to the Lord His mercies

and His wonders to the children of humankind,

106:9for He filled an empty soul

and filled a hungry soul with good things.

106:10Those sitting in darkness and death’s shadow,

fettered in poverty and iron,

106:11because they provoked God’s oracles

and spurned the Most High’s counsel,

106:12their heart was humbled in toils;

they grew weak, and there was no helper.

106:13They cried to the Lord when they were afflicted,

and He saved them from their distresses,

106:14and brought them out of darkness and death’s shadow

and broke their bonds apart.

106:15Let them acknowledge to the Lord His mercies

and His wonders to the children of humankind,

106:16for He shattered bronze gates

and broke iron bars.

106:17He helped them out of their lawless way,

for because of their lawless deeds they were humbled.

106:18Their soul abhorred every food,

and they drew near the gates of death.

106:19They cried to the Lord when they were afflicted,

and He saved them from their distresses.

106:20He sent His word and healed them

and rescued them from their destructions.

106:21Let them acknowledge to the Lord His mercies

and His wonders to the children of humankind,

106:22and let them sacrifice a sacrifice of praise

and proclaim His works in exultation.

106:23Those going down into the sea in ships,

doing work on many waters,

106:24they saw the Lord’s works

and His wonders in the depth.

106:25He spoke, and a storm wind stood,

and its waves were raised.

106:26They rise as far as the heavens

and descend as far as the abysses;

their soul melted in evils.

106:27They were troubled and shaken like a drunken man,

and all their wisdom was swallowed up.

106:28They cried to the Lord when they were afflicted,

and He brought them out of their distresses,

106:29and commanded the storm, and it settled into a breeze,

and its waves fell silent.

106:30They rejoiced because they became quiet,

and He guided them to the harbor of their desire.

106:31Let them acknowledge to the Lord His mercies

and His wonders to the children of humankind,

106:32let them exalt Him in an assembly of the people

and praise Him in a sitting of elders.

106:33He made rivers a wilderness

and outlets of waters thirst,

106:34a fruitful land brine,

because of the wickedness of those inhabiting it.

106:35He made a wilderness lakes of waters

and waterless land outlets of waters,

106:36and settled hungry people there,

and they established a city of habitation,

106:37and sowed fields and planted vineyards

and produced a fruitful crop.

106:38He blessed them, and they multiplied greatly,

and He did not diminish their livestock.

106:39They became few and suffered harm

from the affliction of evils and pain.

106:40Contempt was poured out upon rulers,

and He made them wander in an impassable place, not a road.

106:41He helped the poor out of poverty

and made families like sheep.

106:42The upright will see and rejoice,

and all lawlessness will stop its mouth.

106:43Who is wise and will keep these things,

and will they understand the Lord’s mercies?
