My God, My God, Why Have You Forsaken Me?

21:1For the end, concerning the help of the morning. A psalm of David.
21:2God, my God, attend to me; why did You abandon me?
Far from my salvation are the words of my transgressions.
21:3My God, I will cry by day, and You will not hear,
and by night, and not to folly for me.
21:4But You dwell among holy ones,
the praise of Israel.
21:5In You our fathers hoped;
they hoped, and You rescued them.
21:6To You they cried out and were saved;
in You they hoped and were not put to shame.
21:7But I am a worm and not a human being,
a human reproach and an object of the people’s contempt.
21:8All who watch me sneered at me;
they spoke with their lips and shook their heads:
21:9“He hoped in the Lord; let Him rescue him;
let Him save him, since He desires him.”
21:10For You are the One who drew me from the belly,
my hope from my mother’s breasts.
21:11Upon You I was cast from the womb;
from my mother’s belly You are my God.
21:12Do not stand away from me, for affliction is near,
for there is no one to help.
21:13Many calves surrounded me;
fat bulls encompassed me.
21:14They opened their mouth against me
like a lion seizing prey and roaring.
21:15I was poured out like water,
and all my bones were scattered.
My heart became like wax
melting in the midst of my belly.
21:16My strength dried up like a potsherd;
my tongue is stuck to my throat,
and You brought me down into the dust of death.
21:17For many dogs surrounded me;
a gathering of evildoers encompassed me;
they dug into my hands and feet.
21:18I counted all my bones;
but they observed and looked upon me.
21:19They divided my garments among themselves,
and cast a lot for my clothing.
21:20But You, Lord, do not put my help far away;
attend to my support.
21:21Rescue my soul from the sword
and my only one from the dog’s hand.
21:22Save me from a lion’s mouth
and my lowliness from the horns of one-horned animals.
21:23I will recount Your name to my brothers;
in the midst of the assembly I will sing hymns to You:
21:24You who fear the Lord, praise Him!
All Jacob’s seed, glorify Him!
Let all Israel’s seed fear Him,
21:25because He did not despise or resent the poor man’s petition,
nor turn His face away from me,
and when I cried out to Him, He heard me.
21:26From You comes my praise in a great assembly;
I will repay my vows before those who fear Him.
21:27The needy will eat and be filled,
and those who seek the Lord will praise Him;
their hearts will live for the age of the age.
21:28All the limits of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord,
and all the families of the nations will bow down before You,
21:29because kingship belongs to the Lord,
and He is master of the nations.
21:30All the prosperous of the earth ate and bowed down;
before Him all who descend into the earth will fall,
and my soul lives for Him.
21:31And my seed will serve Him;
the coming generation will be announced to the Lord,
21:32and they will announce His righteousness
to a people yet to be born,
because the Lord has done it.
