I Will Open My Mouth in Parables

77:1Of understanding. Of Asaph.

Attend, my people, to my law;

bend your ear to the words of my mouth.

77:2I will open my mouth in parables;

I will utter riddles from the beginning,

77:3whatever we heard and knew,

and our fathers recounted to us,

77:4it was not hidden from their children for another generation,

as we announce the Lord’s praises,

His mighty acts and the wonders He did.

77:5And He raised a testimony in Jacob

and set a law in Israel,

whatever He commanded our fathers

to make known to their sons,

77:6so that another generation might know,

sons who will be born;

and they will rise and announce it to their sons,

77:7so that they may set their hope upon God

and not forget God’s works,

and seek out His commandments,

77:8so that they may not become like their fathers,

a crooked and embittering generation,

a generation that did not direct its heart,

whose spirit was not faithful with God.

77:9The sons of Ephraim, drawing and shooting bows,

turned back on the day of war.

77:10They did not keep God’s covenant

and were unwilling to walk in His law,

77:11and forgot His benefits

and the wonders He showed them,

77:12the wonders He did before their fathers,

in Egypt’s land, in the plain of Tanis.

77:13He tore the sea apart and led them through;

He stood the waters like a skin-bag,

77:14and guided them with a cloud by day,

and all night with the illumination of fire.

77:15He split a rock in the wilderness

and gave them drink as in a great abyss,

77:16and brought water out of a rock

and made waters descend like rivers.

77:17And they continued still to sin against Him;

they embittered the Most High in a waterless place,

77:18and put God to the test in their hearts,

asking food for their souls,

77:19and spoke against God and said,

“Surely God cannot prepare a table in a wilderness?

77:20Since He struck a rock and waters flowed,

and torrents were flooded,

surely He cannot also give bread

or prepare a table for His people?”

77:21Therefore the Lord heard and delayed;

and fire was kindled in Jacob,

and wrath rose against Israel,

77:22because they did not believe in God

nor hope in His salvation.

77:23And He commanded the clouds above

and opened heaven’s doors,

77:24and rained manna for them to eat,

and gave them heaven’s bread.

77:25A human ate angels’ bread;

He sent them food supplies to fullness.

77:26He moved the south wind from heaven,

and brought the southwest wind by His power,

77:27and rained flesh upon them like dust,

and winged birds like the sands of seas,

77:28and they fell within their camp,

around their tents,

77:29and they ate and were filled exceedingly,

and He brought them their desire.

77:30They were not deprived of their desire.

While their food was still in their mouth,

77:31and God’s wrath rose against them,

and He killed among their fat ones,

and entangled Israel’s chosen men.

77:32In all these things they sinned still

and did not believe in His wonders,

77:33and their days failed in futility,

and their years with haste.

77:34Whenever He killed them, they sought Him;

and they returned and rose early toward God,

77:35and remembered that God is their helper,

and God Most High is their redeemer.

77:36And they deceived Him with their mouth,

and lied to Him with their tongue,

77:37but their heart was not upright with Him,

nor were they faithful in His covenant.

77:38But He is compassionate;

He will make atonement for their sins and not destroy,

and will multiply His turning back of wrath,

and will not kindle all His anger.

77:39And He remembered that they are flesh,

a spirit going away and not returning.

77:40How often they embittered Him in the wilderness

and angered Him in a waterless land!

77:41And they turned again and tested God,

and provoked the Holy One of Israel.

77:42They did not remember His hand,

the day He redeemed them from an oppressor’s hand,

77:43how He set His signs in Egypt

and His portents in the plain of Tanis,

77:44and turned their rivers into blood,

and their rain-waters, so that they might not drink.

77:45He sent a dog-fly among them, and it devoured them,

and a frog, and it destroyed them.

77:46And He gave their fruit to mildew,

and their labors to the locust.

77:47He killed their vine with hail,

and their sycamores with frost.

77:48And He handed their cattle over to hail,

and their possessions to fire.

77:49He sent upon them the anger of His wrath,

wrath, anger and affliction,

a mission through evil angels.

77:50He made a road for His wrath;

He did not spare their souls from death,

and confined their cattle to death,

77:51and struck every firstborn in Egypt,

the firstfruits of their labors in Ham’s tents.

77:52And He led His people away like sheep,

and brought them up like a flock in the wilderness,

77:53and guided them in hope, and they did not grow cowardly;

and the sea covered their enemies.

77:54And He brought them into the boundary of His sanctuary,

this mountain which His right hand acquired,

77:55and expelled nations from before them,

and assigned them by a cord of inheritance,

and settled Israel’s tribes in their tents.

77:56And they tested and embittered God Most High,

and did not keep His testimonies,

77:57and turned back and broke faith just like their fathers,

and changed into a crooked bow,

77:58and angered Him with their hills,

and provoked Him to jealousy with their carvings.

77:59God heard and disregarded,

and counted Israel as utterly nothing,

77:60and rejected Shiloh’s tent,

His dwelling, where He encamped among humans.

77:61And He handed their strength over to captivity,

and their beauty into an enemy’s hands,

77:62and confined His people to the sword,

and disregarded His inheritance.

77:63Fire devoured their young men,

and their virgins were not mourned.

77:64Their priests fell by the sword,

and their widows will not be wept for.

77:65And the Lord awoke like one sleeping,

like a powerful man heavy with wine,

77:66and struck His enemies backward;

He gave them everlasting reproach.

77:67And He rejected Joseph’s dwelling,

and did not choose Ephraim’s tribe.

77:68And He chose Judah’s tribe,

Mount Zion, which He loved,

77:69and built His sanctuary like that of one-horned beasts;

in the earth He founded it forever.

77:70And He chose David His servant,

and took him up from the flocks of sheep;

77:71from behind the ewes giving birth He took him,

to shepherd Jacob His people

and Israel His inheritance.

77:72And he shepherded them in his heart’s innocence,

and guided them with his hands’ understanding.
