Inherited Greek note50:1 The Greek name and patronymic are retained without inserting an identification as Simon the First or Second. |
Hebrew 50:2 · translated In his days a wall was built, the corners of a dwelling in the King’s temple. | By him the height of the double wall was founded, a high retaining wall around the sacred precinct. | Different · Hebrew 50:2 — The architectural description differs from Greek double wall and retaining wall. Inherited Greek note50:2 “Wall” supplies the structure understood after διπλῆς, “double”; the exact architecture is not reconstructed. |
Hebrew 50:3 · translated In his generation a reservoir was dug; [uncertain wording: I will speak of them in its abundance]. | In his days a water reservoir was hewn out, a cistern whose circumference was like a sea. | Different · Hebrew 50:3 — The second Hebrew clause is difficult and rendered literally; Greek compares the cistern to a sea. |

Hebrew witness B · B XIX Rectoכנצבענפי בימי מועד ]] [[ וכשושן על יבלי מים׃ כפרח לבנון ביׄמׄ יׄ קיץ ]] [[ | like a rose blossom in the days of new growth, like lilies beside an outflow of water, like a shoot of Lebanon in summer days, | Similar · Hebrew 50:8 — The first Hebrew plant expression is textually compressed; both witnesses use floral comparisons. No Hebrew text is available in the selected manuscript coverage for this unit. This is a source gap, not a classified omission. | he stretched his hand over the libation vessel and poured a drink offering from the blood of the grape. He poured it at the altar’s foundations, a pleasing fragrance to the Most High, King of all. | Not classified. No paired Hebrew reading is supplied. Inherited Greek note50:19 Κόσμος is the ordered arrangement or adornment of the rite, here rendered “ceremony”; it does not mean the created world in this setting. |
Hebrew 50:20 · translated Then he came down and lifted his hands over the whole assembly of Israel, YHWH’s blessing on his lips, and gloried in YHWH’s name. Hebrew witness B · B XIX Versoאז ירד ונשא ידיו ]] [[ על כל קהל ישראל׃ [[ ]] וברכת ייי בשפתיו ובשם ייי התפאר׃ | Then he came down and raised his hands over the whole assembly of the sons of Israel, to give the Lord’s blessing from his lips and to glory in His name. | Similar · Hebrew 50:20 — The priestly blessing agrees. |

The Hebrew heart phrase is textually difficult. Inherited Greek note50:27 The publisher’s order Ἰησοῦς υἱὸς Σιραχ Ελεαζαρ is also printed in Swete, p. 752, with his spelling Σειράχ. “Eleazar” is retained without rearranging the genealogy into “Jesus son of Eleazar son of Sirach.” Jesus here is the book’s author, not Jesus Christ. [SWETE-SIR] |

Source and numbering
Hebrew English is newly translated from the manuscript-specific transcriptions in The Book of Ben Sira portal. Each translated unit identifies its selected witness and folio. This is a selected-witness working edition, not an exhaustive collation of every manuscript or a reconstruction of lost Hebrew. Brackets and fragmentary status identify uncertainty; no Greek text has been back-translated to fill Hebrew gaps.
The Greek-source English and its notes are inherited from the existing Sirach edition. The comparison categories are provisional editorial assessments against that English; this update is not a fresh verification of every Greek reading or its apparatus.
Working translation preserved from the recovered manuscript of 8 September 2026. Declared source: Septuaginta, Rahlfs–Hanhart, 2006, Deutsche Bibelgesellschaft, publisher’s Greek main text. Independent linguistic and critical-apparatus review remains outstanding. Source-access and reception claims in the inherited notes have not been freshly revalidated. Chapter and section headings are editorial.
The translator’s prologue is separate from the 51 chapters. Its eight source units map to publisher labels 1, 1a–1g; main-text 1:1 maps to 1h. Source 5:15 includes material often numbered 6:1, so chapter 6 begins at 6:2. Source label gaps are preserved; no text is invented.
