Chapter 7
The sealing of Israel
Verse 7:1
Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)
After this I saw four angels standing upon the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, so that no wind might blow upon the earth or upon the sea or upon any tree.
Textual & Reception Notes
Textual [G]: Four corners and four winds form the vision's spatial frame. Earth, sea and trees are separately protected from the held-back wind.
Reception: No passage-specific reception verified in this review.
Verse 7:2
Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)
And I saw another angel coming up from the rising of the sun, having a seal of the living God, and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels who were given to harm the earth and the sea,
Textual & Reception Notes
Textual [G]: From the rising of the sun is the stated direction. Another angel bears God's seal and addresses the four already empowered to harm.
Reception: R037 (Victorinus tradition; scope 7:2).
Verse 7:3
Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)
saying, “Do not harm the earth or the sea or the trees until we seal the slaves of our God upon their foreheads.”
Textual & Reception Notes
Textual [G]: Until makes the suspension of harm depend on sealing God's slaves. Foreheads are the expressly marked location.
Reception: No passage-specific reception verified in this review.
Verse 7:4
Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)
And I heard the number of those sealed: a hundred forty-four thousand, sealed from every tribe of the sons of Israel.
Textual & Reception Notes
Textual [G]: The stated number is preserved; the translation does not decide whether it functions literally or symbolically.
Reception: No passage-specific reception verified in this review.
Verse 7:5
Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)
From the tribe of Judah, twelve thousand sealed; from the tribe of Reuben, twelve thousand; from the tribe of Gad, twelve thousand;
Textual & Reception Notes
Textual [G]: Judah heads the list before Reuben and Gad, with twelve thousand assigned to each. The order is not rearranged into birth order.
Reception: R069 (Irenaeus; scope 7:5–8).
Verse 7:6
Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)
from the tribe of Asher, twelve thousand; from the tribe of Naphtali, twelve thousand; from the tribe of Manasseh, twelve thousand;
Textual & Reception Notes
Textual [G]: Asher, Naphtali and Manasseh each receive twelve thousand. Manasseh remains named even though Joseph also appears later in the list.
Reception: R069 (Irenaeus; scope 7:5–8).
Verse 7:7
Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)
from the tribe of Simeon, twelve thousand; from the tribe of Levi, twelve thousand; from the tribe of Issachar, twelve thousand;
Textual & Reception Notes
Textual [G]: Levi appears between Simeon and Issachar. Its inclusion is preserved rather than harmonized with territorial allotment lists that omit Levi.
Reception: R069 (Irenaeus; scope 7:5–8).
Verse 7:8
Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)
from the tribe of Zebulun, twelve thousand; from the tribe of Joseph, twelve thousand; from the tribe of Benjamin, twelve thousand sealed.
Textual & Reception Notes
Textual [G]: The list includes Levi, Joseph, and Manasseh, and does not name Dan or Ephraim. It is not harmonized to a different tribal list.
Reception: R069 (Irenaeus; scope 7:5–8).
The multitude before the throne
Verse 7:9
Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)
After these things I saw, and look, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation and tribes and peoples and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, and palm branches in their hands.
Textual & Reception Notes
Textual [G]: John now sees an uncountable multinational crowd after hearing a number in 7:4. The text does not expressly state here whether these are two groups or two presentations of one group.
Reception: R038 (Victorinus tradition; scope 7:9,7:14).
Verse 7:10
Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)
And they cry with a loud voice, saying, “Salvation belongs to our God, the One sitting upon the throne, and to the Lamb.”
Textual & Reception Notes
Textual [G]: Salvation is ascribed jointly to God and the Lamb; belongs to makes the Greek verbless acclamation intelligible in English.
Reception: No passage-specific reception verified in this review.
Verse 7:11
Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)
And all the angels were standing around the throne and the elders and the four living creatures, and fell upon their faces before the throne and worshiped God,
Textual & Reception Notes
Textual [G]: All the angels join in falling on their faces and worshiping God; the elders and creatures remain part of the surrounding scene.
Reception: No passage-specific reception verified in this review.
Verse 7:12
Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)
saying, “Amen. The blessing and the glory and the wisdom and the thanksgiving and the honor and the power and the strength belong to our God for the ages of the ages. Amen.”
Textual & Reception Notes
Textual [G]: Amen frames the seven named acclamations. Thanksgiving replaces the wealth term heard in the earlier Lamb acclamation at 5:12.
Reception: No passage-specific reception verified in this review.
Verse 7:13
Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)
And one of the elders answered, saying to me, “These who are clothed in the white robes, who are they, and from where did they come?”
Textual & Reception Notes
Textual [G]: The elder asks both identity and origin. Answered introduces his speech although no preceding spoken question from John is recorded.
Reception: No passage-specific reception verified in this review.
Verse 7:14
Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)
And I said to him, “My lord, you know.” And he said to me, “These are the ones coming out of the great affliction, and they washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.
Textual & Reception Notes
Textual [G]: My lord addresses the elder and is lower-case. The blood making robes white is the source’s paradoxical image, not replaced with a literal washing agent.
Reception: R038 (Victorinus tradition; scope 7:9,7:14).
Verse 7:15
Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)
For this reason they are before the throne of God, and serve Him day and night in His temple, and the One sitting upon the throne will spread His tent over them.
Textual & Reception Notes
Textual [G]: Spread His tent over them renders skēnoō epi, preserving the sheltering dwelling image.
Reception: No passage-specific reception verified in this review.
Verse 7:16
Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)
They will hunger no more or thirst any more, nor will the sun fall upon them, nor any burning heat,
Textual & Reception Notes

Reception: No passage-specific reception verified in this review.
Verse 7:17
Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)
because the Lamb in the midst of the throne will shepherd them and guide them to springs of waters of life; and God will wipe every tear from their eyes.”

Reception: R081 (John Bunyan; scope 3:4,4:4,7:17,14:1–5,21:4).
