He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up, and according to His custom entered the synagogue on the Sabbath day. He stood up to read. The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to Him. Unrolling it, He found the place where it was written: “The Lord’s Spirit is upon Me, because He anointed Me to announce good news to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim release to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to send the shattered away in release, to proclaim the Lord’s acceptable year.” He rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on Him. He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your ears.” All bore witness to Him and wondered at the words of grace coming from His mouth. They said, “Is this not Joseph’s son?”
He said to them, “Surely you will tell Me this proverb: ‘Physician, heal yourself.’ ‘Do here in Your homeland also everything we heard happened in Capernaum.’” He said, “Amen, I tell you, no prophet is acceptable in his homeland. But in truth I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in Elijah’s days, when heaven was shut for three years and six months and a great famine came over the whole land. Yet Elijah was sent to none of them except to a widow at Zarephath in Sidon’s territory. And there were many leprous people in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, but none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian.” Everyone in the synagogue was filled with anger when they heard these things. They rose, threw Him out of the city, and led Him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, intending to hurl Him down. But He passed through their midst and went on His way.
