As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon, called Peter, and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. Going a little farther, He saw James son of Zebedee and John his brother in the boat with their father, mending and putting their nets in order.
As the crowd pressed upon Him to hear God’s word, He was standing beside the lake of Gennesaret. He saw two boats beside the lake; the fishermen had left them and were washing their nets. He entered one of the boats, which belonged to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from the land. Sitting down, He taught the crowds from the boat. When He finished speaking, He said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water, and let down your nets for a catch.” Simon answered, “Master, we labored through the whole night and caught nothing, but at Your word I will let down the nets.” When they did this, they enclosed a great multitude of fish, and their nets began to tear. They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. They came and filled both boats, so that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw it, he fell at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, Lord, because I am a sinful man.” For amazement had seized him and everyone with him at the catch of fish they had taken.
James and John, sons of Zebedee, were Simon’s partners and were likewise astonished at the catch. Jesus said to Simon, “Do not fear; from now on you will be catching people alive.” He called them, saying, “Come after Me, and I will make you fishers of people.” When they had brought their boats to land, they immediately left their nets and everything behind and followed Him. James and John left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired workers and went after Him.
