In those days Jesus went out to the mountain to pray and spent the night in prayer to God. When day came, He called to Himself those He wanted, and they came to Him. From His disciples He chose twelve, whom He also named apostles, to be with Him and to be sent out to proclaim. He gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out and to heal every disease and infirmity.

These were the Twelve: first Simon, whom He named Peter, and Andrew his brother; James son of Zebedee and John his brother, whom He named Boanerges, meaning Sons of Thunder; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus; Thaddaeus, also called Judas son of James; Simon the Cananaean, called the Zealot; and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor and handed Him over.
