He set another parable before them, saying, “The kingdom of the heavens was likened to a man who sowed good seed in his field. While people slept, his enemy came and sowed darnel among the wheat and went away. When the crop sprouted and bore fruit, then the darnel appeared also. The householder’s slaves came and said to him, ‘Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? From where, then, does it have darnel?’ He said to them, ‘An enemy did this.’ The slaves said to him, ‘Do you want us, then, to go and gather it?’ He said, ‘No, lest while gathering the darnel you uproot the wheat with it. Let both grow together until the harvest. At harvest time I will tell the reapers: Gather the darnel first and bind it into bundles to burn it, but gather the wheat into my storehouse.’”
He set another parable before them: “How shall we compare the kingdom of God? The kingdom of the heavens is like a mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field. When sown, it is smaller than all the seeds on the earth, but it grows greater than the garden plants and becomes a tree with great branches, so that the birds of the sky come and dwell in its branches and shelter under its shade.”
He spoke another parable to them: “The kingdom of the heavens is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three sata of flour until the whole was leavened.” Jesus spoke all these things to the crowds in parables, and He spoke nothing to them without a parable, so that what was spoken through the prophet might be fulfilled: “I will open My mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden from the foundation.”
With many such parables He spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear. Privately He explained everything to His own disciples.
Then He left the crowds and entered the house. His disciples came to Him, saying, “Explain to us the parable of the darnel in the field.” He answered, “The One sowing the good seed is the Son of Man. The field is the world; the good seed are the sons of the kingdom; the darnel are the sons of the evil one; the enemy who sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the consummation of the age; and the reapers are angels. Just as the darnel is gathered and burned with fire, so it will be at the consummation of the age. The Son of Man will send His angels, and they will gather from His kingdom all causes of stumbling and those who practice lawlessness. They will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be weeping and grinding of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Let the one who has ears hear. The kingdom of the heavens is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid. In his joy he goes and sells everything he has and buys that field.
“Again, the kingdom of the heavens is like a merchant seeking fine pearls. Finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold everything he had and bought it. Again, the kingdom of the heavens is like a dragnet cast into the sea and gathering fish of every kind. When it was full, they drew it onto the shore, sat down, and gathered the good into containers, but threw the rotten away. So it will be at the consummation of the age: the angels will go out and separate the evil from the midst of the righteous and cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be weeping and grinding of teeth. Have you understood all these things?” They said to Him, “Yes.” He said to them, “Therefore every scribe made a disciple for the kingdom of the heavens is like a householder who brings out of his treasure things new and old.” When Jesus finished these parables, He departed from there.
