Psalm 60

Restore the people after defeat

Verse 60:1 Disparate

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

[60:1] For the director. According to “Lily of testimony.” A Miktam of David, for teaching.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

[59:1] For the end. For those who will yet be changed. For an inscription on a pillar, of David, for instruction.

Classification & Notes

Disparate. Text: The Hebrew lily/testimony heading becomes Greek people who will yet be changed.

Verse 60:2 Divergent

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

[60:2] When he fought Aram-Naharaim and Aram-Zobah, and Joab returned and struck twelve thousand of Edom in the Valley of Salt.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

[59:2] When he burned Mesopotamia of Syria and Syria Zobah, and Joab returned and struck the Valley of Salt—twelve thousand.

Classification & Notes

Divergent. Text: Hebrew fighting becomes Greek burning; Edom is not named in this Greek heading. Both retain twelve thousand.

Verse 60:3 Different

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

[60:3] God, You rejected us and broke through us;

You were angry; restore Your favor to us.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

[59:3] God, You rejected us and pulled us down;

You were angry and had compassion on us.

Classification & Notes

Different. Text: Hebrew requested restoration, its implied favor made explicit with Rashi, becomes past Greek compassion (RASHI-PS60, 3).

Verse 60:4 Similar

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

[60:4] You shook the earth and split it;

heal its breaches, for it totters.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

[59:4] You shook the earth and troubled it;

heal its fractures, for it was shaken.

Classification & Notes

Similar. Text: The shaken earth and healing agree.

Verse 60:5 Similar

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

[60:5] You showed Your people hardship;

You made us drink wine of bewilderment.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

[59:5] You showed Your people hard things;

You made us drink wine of stupor.

Classification & Notes

Similar. Text: The disorienting wine agrees.

Verse 60:6 Disparate

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

[60:6] You gave those who fear You a trial to be tested,

for the sake of beauty. Selah.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

[59:6] You gave those who fear You a sign

to flee from the face of a bow. Diapsalma.

Classification & Notes

Disparate. Text: Hebrew trial, testing and beauty follow directly read Rashi; he explains the vindication of God's judgments after testing. Alternative banner/truth constructions remain open. Greek explicitly gives a sign for flight from a bow (RASHI-PS60, 6).

Verse 60:7 Different

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

[60:7] So that Your beloved may be delivered,

save Your right hand and answer me.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

[59:7] So that Your beloved may be rescued,

save by Your right hand and hear me.

Classification & Notes

Different. Text: Hebrew right hand is the object saved with Rashi; Greek explicitly makes it the means. Read answer me is verified against the written form in Chabad (RASHI-PS60, 7).

Verse 60:8 Different

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

[60:8] God spoke in His sanctuary:

I will exult; I will divide a portion,

and measure the Valley of Succoth.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

[59:8] God spoke in His holy place:

“I will exult and divide Shechem,

and measure out the Valley of Tents.

Classification & Notes

Different. Text: Hebrew portion follows one of Rashi's explanations of shekhem; the place-name Shechem is also recorded there. Greek retains the name Shechem (Σικιμα) and translates Succoth as tents. Rashi hears the king rejoicing in God's promise; Greek may present the following speech as God's (RASHI-PS60, 8).

Verse 60:9 Different

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

[60:9] Gilead is mine, and Manasseh is mine;

Ephraim is the stronghold of my head;

Judah is my lawgiver.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

[59:9] Gilead is mine, and Manasseh is mine;

Ephraim is the strengthening of my head;

Judah is my king.

Classification & Notes

Different. Text: Hebrew lawgiver becomes Greek king. The following first-person speech permits divine oracle or royal appropriation of God’s promise. Lowercase possessives leave that speaker question open, consistently with the parallel Greek Psalm 107:8–10; clear addresses to God remain capitalized.

Verse 60:10 Disparate

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

[60:10] Moab is my washbasin;

upon Edom I will cast my lock;

Philistia, join yourself to me.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

[59:10] Moab is the basin of my hope;

upon Idumea I will extend my sandal;

foreigners were subjected to me.”

Classification & Notes

Disparate. Text: Hebrew washing becomes Greek hope. Hebrew lock and Philistia joining follow Rashi's imprisonment and subordination interpretations; sandal and a shouted acclamation are alternatives. Greek explicitly has a sandal and past subjection (RASHI-PS60, 10).

Verse 60:11 Different

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

[60:11] Who will bring me to a fortified city?

Who has led me as far as Edom?

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

[59:11] Who will lead me away into an enclosed city?

Who will guide me as far as Idumea?

Classification & Notes

Different. Text: Hebrew second question uses past leading; Greek future.

Verse 60:12 Similar

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

[60:12] Is it not You, God, who rejected us?

Yet You do not go out, God, with our armies.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

[59:12] Is it not You, God, who rejected us?

And You will not go out, God, with our forces.

Classification & Notes

Similar. Text: The rejected army's appeal agrees.

Verse 60:13 Similar

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

[60:13] Give us help against the foe,

for human deliverance is empty.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

[59:13] Give us help from affliction,

for human salvation is vain.

Classification & Notes

Similar. Text: Enemy becomes affliction; the inadequacy of human aid agrees.

Verse 60:14 Different

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

[60:14] Through God we will act with might,

and He will trample our foes.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

[59:14] But through God we will do a mighty deed,

and He will reduce our afflicters to nothing.

Classification & Notes

Different. Text: Hebrew trampling becomes Greek nullification.
