Acts 3 — Healing at the Beautiful Gate

The man unable to walk is healed

Verse 3:1

Greek–English Translation

Peter and John were going up to the temple at the ninth hour, the hour of prayer.

Verse 3:2

Greek–English Translation

A man unable to walk from his mother’s womb was being carried there. They used to place him each day at the temple gate called Beautiful, to ask for alms from those entering the temple.

Text: The disability is congenital, and the placing at the gate is habitual. The unnamed carriers are not identified beyond the source.

When he saw Peter and John about to enter the temple, he asked to receive alms.

NA28: [ἔγειρε καὶ] περιπάτει, "rise up and walk" (SBLGNT περιπάτει); the rendering above follows SBLGNT; NA28 would read "rise up and walk".

Taking him by the right hand, he raised him up. At once his feet and ankles were strengthened.

Text: Pais can mean child or servant. Servant is used for Jesus in this speech and in 4:27,30; the same word describes David at 4:25. This lexical choice is distinct from denying or affirming other passages’ explicit Son language.

But you denied the Holy and Righteous One and asked for a murderer to be granted to you.

You killed the Author of life, whom God raised from the dead; we are witnesses of this.

Text: Archēgos can denote a founder, originator, or leader. Author of life preserves the contrast with killed; the same noun at 5:31 is rendered Leader in its different pairing.

Verse 3:16

Greek–English Translation

Through faith in His name, His name has strengthened this man whom you see and know; and the faith that is through Him has given him this complete soundness before all of you.

Text: The name and faith are each repeated. The sentence does not explicitly identify one human possessor of the faith, so no such identification is added.

Text: Apokatastasis is restoration. The relation of all things to what the prophets spoke is retained; no comprehensive later doctrine of universal restoration is substituted for the clause. Heaven is the receiving subject in this rendering.

Verse 3:22

Greek–English Translation

Moses said, ‘The Lord God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers. You shall listen to him in everything he says to you.

Text: The quotation is translated as printed in Acts. Its prophet’s pronouns remain lower case within Moses’ prospective statement rather than using typography to replace the speech with its subsequent interpretation.

NA28: ὁ θεὸς [ὑμῶν], "the Lord your God" (SBLGNT ὁ θεός); the rendering above follows SBLGNT; NA28 would read "the Lord your God".

Verse 3:23

Greek–English Translation

Every person who does not listen to that prophet will be destroyed from among the people.’

And all the prophets, from Samuel and those who followed—as many as spoke—also announced these days.

Verse 3:26

Greek–English Translation

God raised up His Servant and sent Him first to you, to bless you by turning each of you away from your wicked deeds.”

Textual and Reception Notes

Text: Raised up may refer to God’s bringing forth or appointing His Servant, with resurrection also present in the speech’s context. The wording is left broad. The selected verse does not repeat the name Jesus after His Servant. Turning away describes the blessing’s action, not an added prerequisite.
