Chapter 23

Before Pilate and Herod; crucifixion, death, and burial

Verse 23:1

And they began to accuse Him, saying, “We found this man turning our nation astray and forbidding tribute to be given to Caesar, and saying that He Himself is Christ, a king.”

The accusation attributes a prohibition of tribute to Jesus; it is translated as an accusation, without altering it to agree with His answer in twenty:twenty-five. ‘Christ, a king’ preserves the two titles in the accusers’ formulation.

The base reads ‘when You come in Your kingdom,’ ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ σου. It addresses Him as Jesus, without an added Lord.

NA28 reads ὅταν ἔλθῃς εἰς τὴν βασιλείαν σου (SBLGNT ὅταν ἔλθῃς ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ σου); the rendering above follows SBLGNT and would read “when You come into Your kingdom” under NA28 (collated against TAGNT edition marks, not a printed NA28 apparatus).

Verse 23:43

And He said to him, “Amen, I tell you: today you will be with Me in Paradise.”

The rendering attaches ‘today’ to ‘you will be,’ the immediate promise of being with Jesus in Paradise. Punctuation is editorial; the Greek word order is ‘Amen to you I say today with Me you will be in Paradise.’

Verse 23:44

And it was already about the sixth hour, and darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour,

The ancient hours, approximately the sixth through ninth, are retained without replacing them with clock times. γῆ may mean land or earth; ‘land’ does not settle the darkness’s geographical extent.

Verse 23:45

as the sun’s light failed. And the curtain of the sanctuary was split down the middle.

Textual & Reception Notes

ἐκλιπόντος describes the sun’s failing. ‘Light’ is supplied in English to express that sense; the verse is not turned into a claim about a calculated astronomical eclipse. ναός refers to the sanctuary building.

And Jesus cried out with a loud voice and said, “Father, into Your hands I entrust My spirit.” Having said this, He breathed His last.
