Mark 10

Marriage, children, wealth, and the servant's path

Verse 10:1

Greek–English Translation

He rose from there and came into the territory of Judea and beyond the Jordan. Crowds gathered to Him again, and as was His custom, He again taught them.

Textual and Reception Notes

Verse 10:2

Greek–English Translation

They asked Him whether it was lawful for a man to divorce his wife, testing Him.

Textual and Reception Notes

Text and selective apparatus: The selected main text leaves the questioners unnamed here. The apparatus identifies Holmes's reading, also in WH's margin; WH, Treg, NA28, and RP add that Pharisees approached. Their name is not inserted into this translation.

Text and selective apparatus: NA28 reads καὶ [προσελθόντες Φαρισαῖοι] ἐπηρώτων αὐτὸν (SBLGNT καὶ ἐπηρώτων αὐτὸν); the rendering above follows SBLGNT and would read “Pharisees came up and asked Him” under NA28 (collated against TAGNT edition marks, not a printed NA28 apparatus).

Verse 10:3

Greek–English Translation

He answered them, “What did Moses command you?”

Textual and Reception Notes

Textual and Reception Notes

Verse 10:9

Greek–English Translation

Therefore, what God has yoked together, let no human separate.”

Textual and Reception Notes

Verse 10:10

Greek–English Translation

In the house, the disciples asked Him about this again.

Textual and Reception Notes

Verse 10:11

Greek–English Translation

He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her.

Textual and Reception Notes

Verse 10:12

Greek–English Translation

And if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”

Textual and Reception Notes

Text: Mark states the wife's initiating divorce explicitly. Both directions of the saying are retained, without an exception clause imported from another Gospel.

Verse 10:13

Greek–English Translation

People brought children to Him so that He might touch them, but the disciples rebuked them.

Textual and Reception Notes

Verse 10:14

Greek–English Translation

When Jesus saw it, He was indignant and said to them, “Let the children come to Me; do not stop them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.

Textual and Reception Notes

Verse 10:15

Textual and Reception Notes

Textual and Reception Notes

Verse 10:19

Greek–English Translation

Textual and Reception Notes

Verse 10:20

Greek–English Translation

He said to Him, “Teacher, I have kept all these from my youth.”

Textual and Reception Notes

Verse 10:21

Greek–English Translation

Jesus looked at him, loved him, and said to him, “You lack one thing. Go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me.”

Textual and Reception Notes

Saints reception: Clement of Alexandria, Who Is the Rich Man That Shall Be Saved? 11–14, interprets the demand as removal of the passions attached to wealth and defends using possessions to aid others. This is his moral interpretation; it does not replace the explicit command to sell and give in Mark’s wording. [CLEM-RICH]

Verse 10:22

Greek–English Translation

But his face fell at the word, and he went away grieved, for he had many possessions.

Textual and Reception Notes

Verse 10:23

Greek–English Translation

Jesus looked around and said to His disciples, “How hard it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!”

Textual and Reception Notes

Verse 10:24

Greek–English Translation

The disciples were astounded at His words. But Jesus answered them again, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God!

Textual and Reception Notes

Text and selective apparatus: The general statement follows SBLGNT. Its apparatus records 'for those who trust in wealth' in Treg and RP; that qualification is absent from this main-text sentence. Saints reception: Clement, Who Is the Rich Man That Shall Be Saved? 4–5, identifies his cited account as Mark and includes the qualification about trusting in riches. His received wording is recorded separately from SBLGNT’s shorter main text. [CLEM-RICH]

Verse 10:25

Greek–English Translation

It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.”

Textual and Reception Notes

Text and selective apparatus: NA28 reads εἰσελθεῖν (per TAGNT, with TR and Byz; NA27 διελθεῖν) (SBLGNT διελθεῖν); the rendering above follows SBLGNT and would read “for a camel to enter through the eye of a needle” under NA28; TAGNT’s NA28 mark here diverges from its NA27 mark and is doubtful, since NA28 did not revise Mark (collated against TAGNT edition marks, not a printed NA28 apparatus).

Verse 10:26

Greek–English Translation

They were exceedingly astonished and said to one another, “Then who can be saved?”

Textual and Reception Notes

Verse 10:27

Greek–English Translation

Jesus looked at them and said, “With humans it is impossible, but not with God; for all things are possible with God.”

Textual and Reception Notes

Verse 10:30

Greek–English Translation

who will not receive a hundredfold now, in this time—houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and fields, with persecutions—and in the coming age, eternal life.

Textual and Reception Notes

Text: The promise includes 'with persecutions.' The returned kinship list has 'mothers' and omits 'fathers'; both details remain as written.

Greek–English Translation

But many who are first will be last, and the last first.”

But it is not so among you. Whoever wants to become great among you shall be your servant,

Textual and Reception Notes

Verse 10:44

Greek–English Translation

and whoever wants to be first among you shall be slave of all.

Textual and Reception Notes

Text: Diakonos in 10:43 is 'servant'; doulos here is 'slave.' The second term's stronger social status is not flattened into the first.

Verse 10:45

Greek–English Translation

For even the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom in exchange for many.”

Textual and Reception Notes

Text: Lytron is a ransom or release-price; anti expresses exchange or substitution. The wording is preserved without adding an unnamed recipient of the ransom or a later atonement formula.
